An Outstanding Heavy Duty Oxalic Acid Vaporizer at a great price !
This is the one Randy Oliver in Scientific Beekeeping says is “One of the highest-ranked models,” of oxalic acid vaporizer and is the one you’ll pass down to your son. It is manufactured in Switzerland and is now available here on Ebay! If you have more than 10 hives or just want the very best, this is the one for you. The pan is made of stainless steel, which allows an even and controlled transfer of the heat, thus preventing the overheating of the oxalic acid. Oxalic acid that is heated up too high decays and builds formic acid and CO2 reducing efficacy very fast and significantly.
The vaporization of oxalic acid in beehives is a proven method of killing both Varroa & Tracheal mites. This vaporizer comes with “side” wings that serve to keep the vaporizer from overturning in the hive. Load the cup of the vaporizer with one gram (per brood chamber) of oxalic acid (wood bleach that you can purchase here on ebay or at your hardware store) insert it in the hive and connect it to any 12 volt car battery. The vaporization will complete in 2 1/2 minutes. Disconnect the vaporizer and leave it in the hive for a minute more to seal in the vapors and you’re finished! Remove it from the hive, DUNK in a pail of water (no need to use a wet rag or sponge (but you can)) & you’re ready for your next hive!
Remember to seal the hive for 10 minutes after you remove the vaporizer to lock in the vapors. Cut pieces of foam work just great.
With other treatment methods, you need to purchase them over & over and at substantial cost. With vaporization, you have a one-time cost for the vaporizer and the treatments are almost pennies per treatment.
The Varrox is the “Cadillac” of vaporizers! You’ll find no better vaporizer on the market. It is built to last a lifetime and more! With the Varrox, you can “dunk” it in water to cool down between uses, so that you can quickly move to the next hive. You can’t “dunk” the glowplug models, you must wait for them to cool so they take much longer.
Think Oxalic Acid Vaporization! Many times the packages that you’ll buy will include mites with them. Oxalic Acid Vaporizer will kill those mites before they explode in growth.
OAV is also very effective if used with the right timing with a walk away split. Place the queen with no brood and plenty of nurse bees and drawn comb in one half of the split and in the other all the brood (and nurse bees to cover). This results in a brief period in both splits with no capped brood, and thus no mites hiding under the capped brood. These are perfect conditions for OAV treatment. If the queen-less side doesn’t successfully re-queen, you can recombine (or add a mated queen), so the relative risk is low.
You can also use OAV on your packages…….again perfect conditions (no brood) to rid your hive of mites. After placing the package and assuring that the queen was accepted …….OAV will give your hive a great mite-free start.
OAV does not harm, brood, bees or the queen.
Read all the reviews on BeeSource about OAV, you’ll be amazed by what members are saying. After OAV, their hives are livelier and the mite drops (kills) are almost beyond belief.
OAV is also a GREAT treatment for those swarms you’re going to catch! Wait until they are established and hit them with OAV, you’ll kill almost all the mites in that swarm! and give that new hive a great start….
Buy it now for your packages and nucs and have it for the summer when the mite population explodes in late August/Early September. That is a GREAT time to treat! No heavy brood boxes to lift, no frames to pry apart. Just insert the vaporizer and treat. Easy, Simple & Effective!
If the outside temperature is 40 degrees (f) or above, you can safely vaporize.
Note: You must remove your supers prior to treating or simply place a cardboard or coroplast sheet between the supers and hive bodies. You can replace the supers or remove the cardboard 15 minutes after the treatment period. I treat whenever I see mites in the drone brood. Since OA only kills the mites on the bees (phoretic) and not in the brood, you must do three treatments (once a week) to kill the mites as they are emerging with the brood.
Don’t be fooled by those who advertise that their vaporizer is “temperature controlled” thus not allowing Oxalic Acid to turn into formic and carbon monoxide. While it is true that it can happen, it can only occur under laboratory conditions, not in your apiary.
Use appropriate protection as you should not breathe the oxalic acid fumes.
Resolve not to lose your hives to mites! Treat!
